A couple of months ago Josh and I had decided that our electric bill had gotten way out of control. We had kids that were leaving lights on all throughout the house, leaving televisions on, CD players, you name it--it was on and running most of the day. Something had to give. So we brought the kids together and told them that things had to change. We told them that if we could get the electric bill down $15 by the next month we would have a pizza movie night. Now I understand there goes my $15 I saved, but better habits and a lesson learned, so we hoped. So the kids really got into it. They were really improving. We noticed a significant change very quick. By the next month we had made our goal! By the following month after that we went down almost ANOTHER $15! That's almost $30 savings! So last night we surprised the kids and followed through with our pizza movie night. It went a little something like this:
Large Pizza...$10.99
Movie Rental...$1.00 (Gotta love Redbox!)
Treats...$0.00
Teaching the kids a valuable lesson on conserving energy and saving money...PRICELESS!

Great idea! We're always nagging about the lights too....i've considered putting in sensors downstairs so the lights will automatically shut off after lack of movement. :-) I wonder how much of rising bills are us and how much are rising rates!?
We have an aunt & uncle who when they built their house put a switch panel in their master bathroom for all the switches in the basement. The switches are the red ones that light up when on...so at night they can see what lights are still on and then switch them off from their bathroom!!! Would not work with the CD players & such but I have always thought it was an interesting plan in their home design!!! Maybe you could just flip the breaker :)
thats a great story daddy is always telling us to turn of the lights!!! but that is a good way to do it, without punishing them.
Remember how big of a stickler daddy was about lights being on in the house? Now, I know why he was that way! That's great your kids did good last month on keeping lights off. I have even been starting to unplug all the power cords for the computer and t.v every night. I've heard it makes a difference, I'll know next month when I get a bill.
What a great idea! Anything tangible that kids can learn from is great in my eyes...especially yummy pizza! Think we might have to start a similar tradition because Roman is always nagging at us to turn out the lights and unplug the curling iron...
